What’s wrong with Cyberpunk 2077?
Cyberpunk2077 has been an exceptionally long time coming. It started out as a teaser trailer for the 2013 Game Developers Conference, followed by a playable demonstration at the E3 2014 conference. Fans have waited for this moment for years, almost half of its entire development. Cyberpunk2077 was supposed to be the game where CD Projekt Red would surpass their own Witcher 3 in terms of scope and production value, much like how The Witcher 2 surpassed The Witcher 1 back then. Yet with every trailer, every piece of concept art, and every imagined story detail that has been shown to us, it got harder and harder to imagine a truly great Cyberpunk2077.
Now, with the latest Game Informer cover story preview in our hands, the wait is finally over. Cyberpunk2077 is here. And it’s not just a game that CD Projekt Red has made that isn’t great. It’s not just the game that they’ve made that isn’t good enough to match their own ambitions. The game I’m about to review is actually bad enough to bring down the reputation of one of gaming’s most ambitious studios, all its hard work will be overshadowed by this poor thing instead. I’ve accepted that CD Projekt Red won’t be my favorite developer after this comes out.
Not only does Cyberpunk2077 look generic and unremarkable, but it also looks downright bad. It’s supposedly a first-person shooter with driving elements, yet the driving itself seems to be broken. It’s supposed to be a gritty, grungy, darker take on cyberpunk with an amazing soundtrack, yet it doesn’t even look good. It’s supposed to show off the best elements of the Cyberpunk pen-and-paper RPG franchise, yet it turns out that Cyberpunk2077 is actually pretty bland, with only a handful of memorable moments in what seems like an endless amount of tedious gameplay. At least Cyberpunk2077 has an interesting setting though.
As far as gaming controls go, is Cyberpunk2077 a string of failures. The shooting controls are the epitome of disappointing. They’re slow, clunky, and poorly implemented. You can’t really aim properly with any kind of effectiveness, especially when the developers help you out by telling you to point at your target’s head. One click on your mouse is all it takes to make your character reach speeds much faster than they should be, which means that many enemies won’t even pose much of a threat to you anyway.
You can’t move very fast either. This is a problem if the driving mechanics are as broken as they seemed to be in the promotional videos. A lot of potential problems with Cyberpunk2077 are already apparent with just the preview video released so far.
The gunplay is boring too, it’s just pointing your crosshair at stuff and waiting for them to blow up. It’s almost like watching the This War Of Mine gameplay without all the interesting decisions involved beforehand.
Conclusion
Most of the time, you’ll just be running from point A to B in a generic-looking environment, killing anything that stands in your way. And when it actually does something interesting, it’s usually just a glimpse at the vast possibilities this setting could have without any fun gameplay to back it up. And if you think about it a little bit more, there’s nothing remarkable or unique about Cyberpunk2077 either. It’s a shooter with guns and cybernetic implants. Imagine Doom but in a Cyberpunk setting. That’s what you get with Cyberpunk2077, just an unimaginative shooter that is more generic than it should be.
