Is Beloved Tetris the Greatest Old Fashion Video Game?
Alexey Pajitnov created Tetris in 1984 for the Electronika 60. He surely had no idea that his creation would be beloved worldwide even 37 years later. One of the best selling video games of all time, it has sold more than 200 million copies. How has this old fashion videogame remained a force in gaming all these years?
Origins
Alexey Pajitnov joined the Soviet Academy of Sciences in 1979. His day job was testing hardware for speech recognition, but his passion was using computers to give people joy. At the time, access to a computer was a rare privilege. Pajitnov took full advantage of that privilege to develop computer games.
In 1984 Pajitnov began work on what would become Tetris. He based the iconic pieces on a puzzle game from his childhood. However, the rules and gameplay were his own inventions.

When Pajitnov introduced his game to his colleagues at the Academy of Sciences, they were hooked. In just a couple of weeks it had reached every computer in Moscow. Tetris had to be banned from the Moscow Medical Institute; workers were too busy playing Tetris to do their jobs!
Pajitnov then hired 16-year-old Vadim Gerasimov to port the game over to an IBM PC. Pajitnov wanted to export Tetris, but he had no idea how. Worse, his bosses at the Academy of Sciences were upset he had spent time making it. He managed to convince them to help export the game by offering the rights to the Academy.
At first, many gaming companies in the west thought their customers would be hostile to a game from the Soviet Union. But then employees and even executives started getting addicted to it. The skepticism quickly vanished and Tetris exploded in popularity.
Pajitnov made no money from any sales of Tetris until 1996. That was the year his agreement with the Academy of Sciences ended and the rights to Tetris returned to him. Despite missing ten years of royalties, Pajitnov said he was just happy people were playing his game.
Tetris Today
It’s never been easier to play Tetris. Any smartphone can download it in just seconds. Over 130 million people have done just that and bought mobile versions of Tetris. Of course, many illegal copycat games are also out there. A testament to the enduring power of Tetris.
